Gmail’s bulk sender rules: the authentication baseline

A reference brief on the requirements introduced in 2024 for senders reaching personal Gmail accounts.

The baseline introduced in 2024

Google began applying its updated sender requirements on 1 February 2024. Its published bulk-sender guidance covers senders sending more than 5,000 messages per day to personal Gmail accounts.

For those senders, SPF and DKIM must be configured, and a DMARC policy must be published. The policy can be p=none; direct messages still need the visible From domain to align with SPF or DKIM.

Authentication is one part of the rules

Google also specifies requirements for TLS, forward and reverse DNS, message formatting, and spam complaint rates. Marketing and subscribed messages need one-click unsubscribe support and a clearly visible unsubscribe link.

Passing DMARC does not guarantee that a message reaches the inbox. List practices, recipient complaints, and other delivery signals still matter.

Keep the original guidance close
